Old is Gold

Here is  all time favorite hindi songs compilation of mine, which I have put in personally....it covers songs of the 40's and '50's....it is not by any means exhaustive
Let me begin........

Door haton bhai duniyawale, hindustan hamara hain....(Kismet,1944)
This song almost catalysed the Quit India Movement, enraging the British...and it is said the movie had an unbroken record run beaten only bySholay(1975)

Jab dil hi toot gaya.....(Shahjahan, 1946)
K.LSaigal was at his tragic best.....!!!!

 Awara Hoon (Awaara, 1951)
People in Russia swear by this song to this day

Yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho (Patita,1952)
Hemant Kumar  and Lata sang with the kind of romantic flavour sorely missing in songs of today...not to forget, this song had Dev and Usha Kiron in a very pensive mood...!!!

Oh duniya ke rakhwale(Baiju Bawra,1952)
The uniqueness of this bhajan - written by a Muslim, Shakeel Badayuni, composed by a Muslim, Naushad Ali, and soulfully rendered by a Muslim Mohd Rafi!!! All our patrons of current day secularism can learn a thing or two from this...!!!

Yeh raat, yeh chandni phir kahan(Jaal, 1952)
Hemanth Kumar singing and Dev Anand enacting, too good to be good, not to forget S.D. Burman;s contribution in this!!!

 Pyar hua ikraar hua(Shri 420, 1955)
Raj- Nargis romancing in the rain...the mother of all rain song sequences!!!!

Udhar tum haseen ho, idhar dil jawan hain(Mr & Mrs 55, 1955)
A lovelorn Guru Dutt trying to woo a brattish heiress Madhubala makes a very romantic picture indeed..

Rasik Balma(Chori Chori, 1956)
Nargis again, lamenting over lost love!!! Lata Mangeshkar deserves no less credit!!!!

Maang ke saath tumhara (Naya Daur, 1957)
Dilip- Vyjanthimala pledging everlasting love

Yoon to humne laakh haseen dekhe hain..(Tumsa Nahin Dekha,1957)
This film reinvented Shammi Kapoor's failing career.

Aankhon hi aankhon mein ishaara ho gaya(CID,1957)
Dev and Shakila run around the trees...to this breezy number

Yeh raaten, yeh mausam(Dilli ka Thug,1957)
Kishore - Asha never sounded so romantic before this...

Hum aapki ankhon mein(Pyaasa,1957)
This dream sequence had Guru Dutt and Mala Sinha lip synch to Rafi and Geetha Dutt in a romantic war of words...

Dil Tadap tadap ke keh raha hain(Madhumati, 1958)
Salil Choudhary ensured that this duet continues to haunt listeners to this day...there is not a single song in this movie that is not worth recording or preserving...

Mera Naam Chin Chin Chhoo(Howrah Bridge,1958)
This Geetha Dutt item number became more popular than the other songs of the film...

Eena Meena Deeka(Asha,1958)
Kishore at his comic best....a must see for those who have not seen it!!!!

Ajeeb Dastan hain (Dil Apna Aur Preeth Paraya,1960)
Radiocity FM has done yeomen service in keeping this song a hot fave!

Let us move on and trace some more of the golden oldies...

Aana meri jaan meri, Sunday ke Sunday (Shehnai, 1948)

C. Ramachandra, the composer would not have imagined that his song would be immortalised  in egg ads...Legend goes that these lines were inspired by overhearing lovers promising to meet on a Sunday on Chowpati beach in Old Mumbai !!!!

Barsaat mein, humse mile tum sajan (Barsaat, 1948)

Raj kapoor's film, shot in Kashmir, is a folk tale of love and betrayal. This song was picturised on Nimmi.

Tu kahe agar( Andaaz, 1949)

Ironically, all the best numbers in this film were picturised on the second lead, Dilip Kumar, and not on the hero, Raj Kapoor. Mehboob Khan certainly managed a casting coups of sorts by casting these 2 then budding stars.

Gore Gore( samadhi, 1950)

This dance number in this war film was one of it's redeeming factors.

Thandi Hawayen( Naujawan, 1950)

Lata sings, Nalini Jaywant dances, and we know that it is another of those immortals..!
Few people would know that Nalini Jaywant was voted as the most sexy heroine in 1952 by a survey done by Filmfare. People then certainly liked well endowed women!

Shola jo bhadke ( Albela, 1951)

An ageing, fat hero and a young nubile heroine!! The audience lapped it all just becoz of the foot tapping numbers...this song is worth playing in discos to this day. It has lovely Hawaian beats. R the DJ's listening?

Raja ki Aayegi baraat ( Aah, 1953)

This is a fave wedding band song to this day.

Vande Mataram( Anand Math, 1953)
Bankim Chandra's nationalist cry has never gone out of fashion in the last century or so! It was also generously reused by our contemporary craze A.R Rehman. Old is always Gold!!

Nanhe munne bache( Boot Polish, 1954)

Raj Kapoor intended to make a songless film on street children, but a sudden reversal in decision resulted in some of the best songs heard in that year. The movies made waves in international film festivals for it's communist leanings and realistic teatment.
Shankar - Jaikishen did not let down RK on this!

tan dole, man dole( Nagin, 1954)

The mother ,or is it pioneer, of all the snake sagas in our films, the film had an awesome response becoz of it's songs.... this song is doing the remix rounds in the last year or so..

Aao bacchon tumhe dikhaye( Jagriti, 1954)
This song, sung and composed by Kavi Pradeep was a DD fave in the pre- cable era on Aug 15, Jan 26 and not to forget Oct 2!!!

Maana janaab ne pukara nahin/ Chhod do aanchal( Paying Guest, 1957)

People thought Dev Anand and Nutan had sung these numbers themselves! No offence was meant to Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. On the contrary, it was very flattering!

Nagari, nagari ( Mother India,1957)

What do i write about this film? So much has been said about it in the last 46 years since it's release. All i can say is, if you are a true student of cinema, watch it for the fact that it has made news for all the right reasons!

Aanso bhari hain( Parvarish, 1959)

A soulful number rendered by Mukesh, picturised on his alter ego, Raj Kapoor.
This year was a momentous one for music director duo Shankar- Jaikishen. They had reched the pinnacle of their career with as many as 6 blockbusters in one year, the success of which went solely to their melodies. No mean achievement, this!

Achha ji main haari ( Kala Paani, 1958)

Madhubala made a cute picture in this song. Dev Anand was as usual, his matinee idol, flambuoyant self.

Chaudvin ka Chand( Chaudvin Ka Chand,1960)

Perhaps one of the best Muslim socials ever made in Hindi cinema, this film had this romantic number as an additional USP! The lyrics by all time great lyricist-poet Sahir inspired  composer Ravi  and any guesses as to  who might have inspired Sahir to pen these beautiful lines?????

Pyar Kiya to Darna kya( Mughal -E- Azam,1960)

K. Asif's magnum opus had Venus Madhubala as slave girl, Anarkali, defying the Mughal emperor, Akbar, emboldened by her love for the crown prince, Salim. The Sheesh Mahal, recreated at great cost, is the highlight of this song.
